My first thought was maybe they are considered an invasive species, but I found this:

I love waterdogs, I tried to order a few for my son and our wholesalers said it was illegal for them to send them to NC

if your looking for a cool salamander to keep you should pick up some "water dogs" at a bait shop, they are the larval form a of a tiger salamander and resemble an axolotl, when they mature the become confident enough to eat out of your hand and can live to 25 years in the right environment. they can reach 8 inches and may eat slow smaller fish you are keeping with them if you have them in a semi-aquatic environment (which you should). good luck with the salamander!

heres a picture of the water dog and tiger salamander:

honestly, I don't think any salamander is sold commonly other than a newt, and you don't even see them much anymore. Maybe a tiger salmander or a fire slamander.
I don't think they are protected, but I think it's illegal for a shop to sell native stuff.

It used to, but I don't think anyone has posted on it in a couple of years.  It was on kingsnake.com under herp societies.

we've actually found 1 more since we took that picture.  There must be a good population in our area
We also just found an Eastern Kingsnake, I've been searching for snakes my whole life and I never found a kingsnake in the wild.
Chip, does the local herp club have a forum?

That's a northern red salamander, (Pseudotriton ruber).  Not a real common find, congrats!

yeah, he was under a log in a wet spot of the pasture in front of the house. I found one a few years ago in the middle of a hot sunny day walking across our gravel road. Not your typical salamander habitat.
