This would wipe out the non-canine/feline pet industry. Hopefully, it will be killed in committee before it ever becomes a proposed bill.

I see. Well unfortunatly, most gov. thinks "ban everything" is more effective than resloving the real problems... Part of the reason I don't realy put any faith in government.

The brown tree snake invasion came from stowaways in produce shipments, if I recall correctly.  Same with lots of the anoles, arachnids and such in south Florida.  It would seem common sense would dictate we would look at the species that have been released by irresponsible pet owners and consider legislation against those species instead of "ban everything."

Guam is a US territory like Puerto Rico that has non-voting representatives in Congress.  The fact that they are the ones who introduced the legislation explains a lot because Guam is considered one of the places on earth most devestated by bioinvasion, far more than South FL.

Outside of southern Florida, most of the "invasive" angle doesn't hold water.  This is an HSUS move.  Their stance is more radical than most folks realize - for example, that every dog and cat should be spayed/neutered to end companion pet ownership.  They have a lot of money and a lot of clout.  This is a propaganda piece pitched as scientific study.  If it passes as written, reptile ownership will be limited to native species -and those can't even be sold/carried across state lines.
I'm a big opponent of the average public buying giant snakes and the like, but HR669 is aimed at ending keeping almost everything in the industry.

Bulldogg-- I saw that. I didn't know protectoriates had seats in congress... Odd. What do they care anyway? They're not anywhere close to the states.

Well, it seems to me that they should just start registering people as they buy species that are over taking areas. Micro chip them or somthing... I don't know... I'm just talking.. I mean obviously SOMTHING needs to be done about non-native species overtaking areas but this problem seems much further reaching than just baning the whole deal.

If they outlaw ball pythons, I guess I'll be an outlaw.

Before long we will be petting our chia pets and taking a foam lizard for a walk  These are just people that were deprived as a child or had a bad experience with a neglected pet they need to look at the real world ( at least were not eating them!!)

My understanding is that e-petitions are pretty much worthless.  Signatures are just too easy to fake electronically.  What aggravates me about this is how broad they are being.  It's the same 4-5 species that are to blame EVERY time.  Reticulated, African rocks, Burmese pythons, and green iguanas make up every nuisance population that I ever hear of.

Guam?  Undecided

Quote:
The Humane Society of the United States and Humane Society International welcomed the introduction yesterday of the Nonnative Wildlife Invasion Prevention Act (H.R. 669) in the U.S. House of Representatives by Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo (D-
Guam
).

Is there a collective petition or letter we could all sign and send in?

There are currently two bills introduced in congress and a senate bill that will effectively outlaw the ownership of reptiles as pets.  These are the most far-reaching bills ever introduced and will cripple a large portion of the pet trade if passed.  Please contact your congressmen and ask them to vote no on these bills.  Even if you do not keep reptiles, this type of sweeping legislation could wind up affecting the specimens you do keep.  Thanks for reading.
